Low engine oil pressure in excavators: causes and fixes
If the oil pressure warning comes on in your excavator, don't ignore it. Oil pressure protects the engine's internal parts from friction, and any drop can turn into major damage quickly.
First: stop the engine
Shut the engine down safely, park on level ground, and wait ten minutes before checking the oil so it drains back to the sump.
Most common causes
- Low oil level from a leak or consumption.
- Clogged or overdue oil filter.
- Faulty oil pressure sensor giving a false reading.
- Wrong viscosity or old oil.
- Weak oil pump (less common, but more serious).
Checks
- Check the oil level with the dipstick and top up if needed.
- Look for leaks under the engine or around the filter.
- Make sure the sensor connector is clean and seated properly.
- Check the date of the last oil and filter change.
- If everything is fine and the warning stays, the sensor or pump is likely at fault, and you need a technician.
