Bucket and loader teeth: how to choose the right type and when to replace

MACHFIX team · 5 min read

Teeth are the fastest-wearing part on an excavator, backhoe or loader. A sharp tooth penetrates the ground easily, saves fuel and reduces strain on the engine and hydraulics. A worn tooth makes the machine work harder and produce less.

System components

  • Tooth / tip: the part that wears and gets replaced.
  • Adapter: the base welded or bolted to the bucket, on which the tooth fits.
  • Pin & retainer: lock the tooth onto the adapter.

Types of teeth

  • General purpose: for soil and normal digging. The most commonly used option.
  • Rock / heavy duty: thicker with more material, for rock and hard ground.
  • Penetration / tiger: enters compacted ground easily, but wears faster.
  • Flare / wide: for levelling and soft soil.

When to replace a tooth

  1. When the tooth has rounded off and lost its point.
  2. Before wear reaches the adapter. A tooth is cheap; an adapter needs welding and labour.
  3. If there is a crack or a break.
  4. If the pin or retainer is loose or missing. Fit a new one immediately so the tooth doesn't fall off and get lost.
⚠️ Fit teeth with the same system and size as the adapter. Each brand has its own sizes and locking system, and a forced fit can fall off during work.

How to order the right teeth

Photograph the old tooth and adapter from the side and top, note any number printed on the tooth, and the machine model. Tell us the type of work (soil, rock, levelling) so we can suggest the right type.
