Machine clicks but won't crank: battery, starter or relay?
If you turn the key and hear a single click or rapid clicking but the engine doesn't turn over, the problem is in the starting circuit: the battery, the terminals, the relay, or the starter itself. More often than not, the cause is simpler than the starter.
Listen to the sound
- Rapid repeated clicking: usually a weak battery or loose terminals. The starter tries and drops out.
- One loud click and then nothing: the starter may be stuck or faulty, or getting too little power.
- No sound at all: check the key switch, fuse, starter relay and safety interlock (on most machines the hydraulic lock lever must be in the locked position).
Checks
- Make sure the hydraulic lock lever is locked and the transmission is in neutral. These interlocks prevent starting.
- Check the battery terminals: clean off corrosion and tighten them well. This alone fixes many cases.
- Measure the battery: below 12.2 V (or 24.4 V on a 24 V system) means it's weak. Charge it or try a jump start.
- Check the starter fuse and relay. Swap the relay with an identical one from the same box to test.
- Check the ground cable and the main cable to the starter: they must be clean and tight.
- If everything is fine and the starter only clicks, it most likely needs repair or replacement.
Summary
Start with the simple things: safety interlocks, terminals and the battery. Replace the starter last, after confirming it's getting full power.
